The Benefits of Bath Salts

Salts can also be an effective exfoliator as it can help remove dead skin cells and make skin feel softer, smoother, and more moisturized.

5 Ways to Use Bath Salts in the Shower

Since there isn’t much standing water when you take a shower, you may be wondering how to use bath salts in the shower. It is possible to still get the benefits of bath salts without taking a bath, you just need to be a little resourceful.

#1 Make a Salt Scrub

If you add a bit more of carrier oil or a shower gel to your bath salts, it will turn into a paste that you can use as a body scrub. Then rub it onto damp skin, wait a few moments to let it absorb, and then rinse it off. Be careful to avoid any areas where the skin might be sensitive like a cut, sunburn, etc.

There are also a lot of quality salt scrubs available on Amazon here or you can try making our recipe for a homemade pink Himalayan salt scrub.

#2 Use a Shower Pouch

If you feel like the salt scrub might be a bit too harsh on your skin, consider trying a shower pouch. A shower pouch is a small sachet that will hold your bath salts and let the aroma and salts out gradually. Wet it slightly then rub it in circle motions on your skin in the shower. The shower pouch helps the scent last longer and is a soothing exfoliating treatment.

Of course, you can make your own shower pouch at home, but you can also buy one for very little. I like this one because it is made with terry cloth and comes with lavender bath salts.

#3 Find a Body Wash with Salts

Since you are probably already planning on using a body wash when you shower, why not choose one that has bath salts in it? There are many superb body washes that you can easily buy online. Keep in mind though that these will not have the same amount of salt content as a body scrub, but it will be better at exfoliating than the typical body wash.

You can choose a body wash made with sea or Himalayan salts. There are also some that include essential oils.  Check out the options available on Amazon here.

#4 Harness the Shower Steam

Simply place your bath salts in a small, open container in a relatively dry part of your shower like a shelf. Run the hot water for a bit to get some steam going. Then dampen the salts. Breathe in and enjoy the aroma. If the scent fades, re-dampen the salts as necessary throughout your shower.

#5 Buy a Shower Bomb with Salts

You may have heard of bath bombs which you can toss into your bath for a spa-like experience, but did you know there are shower bombs too? Shower bombs (sometimes called shower melts) are not exactly the same as bath bombs.

The ingredients in a bath bomb will mix with the bathwater and interact with your skin directly, while the shower bomb dissolves into the shower steam and your skin absorbs it that way. Shower bombs are generally more concentrated so they should not be used as bath bombs.

For best results place the shower bomb away from direct stream of water so that it will just be wet from the bottom. Run the hot/warm shower for several minutes then you can enter the shower. Take a deep breath and enjoy it.

More Tips for a Relaxing Shower

Using bath salts during your shower will help you relax, but there is more that you can do.  If you want your shower to be more calming, here are a few more suggestions to consider:

  • Use warm water because it will help to relieve tension and open up pores. Be careful that the water is not too hot. Test the temperature before getting in.
  • Play some music and sing in the shower. It may sound cliche but it does help to reduce your stress levels.
  • Consider incorporating essential oils into the shower.
  • Light some scented candles nearby. Just be careful to place them in a spot where they will not be easily knocked over. Do not leave them unattended.
  • Consider investing in a shower massage head for a truly spa-like experience.
